  • Wickliffe Church Homecoming Service
    Sunday, August 14, 2011 @ 11 am

This year’s Wickliffe service (from the 1798 version of The Book of Common Prayer) will be officiated by Rev. Dwight L. Brown and followed by a covered dish picnic outside on the lawn beneath the shady old oak trees. Wickliffe Church was first built in 1818 as a mission of the Old Chapel in Millwood from which 5 other mission churches were founded, including Grace Church in 1831 and St. Mary’s Memorial Church in 1913. EVERYONE IS INVITED to attend the service and potluck luncheon at this beautiful and historic setting as the congregations of Clarke Parish gather together to commemorate our joint heritage. Wickliffe Church is listed in the Virginia Landmarks Register and the National Register of Historical Places. Wickliffe is located in Clarke County just before the West Virginia state line on Rte. 607, about 4 miles north of Rte. 7.

NOTE: There will be no other services offered this day at either Grace or St. Mary’s on August 14th. All parishioners are encouraged to attend the Wickliffe service instead. Please remember to bring a picnic blanket, lawn chairs AND a generous dish to share at the luncheon.

  • This is a very unusual post-colonial church in what seems like the middle of nowhere. I visited it with a small tour of Civil War sites in and around Loudoun County. It was closed when we arrived, but I flagged down a farmer working in the fields behind the church, and it turned out he's the building's caretaker, so we got to go inside after all. I don't believe that it has an active congregation anymore.
